Gerónimo Armijo was born on September 30, 1868, in the Territory
of New Mexico, then part of the United States. Little is known about his youth,
but on January 24, 1887, at age 17, he married María Florencia Garcia at Santa
Gertrudis Church in Mora County. Florencia was a member of San Juan Pueblo, now
known as Ohkay Owingeh.
Gerónimo and Florencia, also known as Mama Encha, made their
home in Mora and had nine children together. Their youngest child, Margarita,
was born in June 1913. Mora was a relatively small community, reaching a peak
population of nearly 14,000 residents in 1920.
The surviving records point to two related but distinct
parts of Gerónimo Armijo’s family history: his long-standing household with
María Florencia Garcia in Mora and the separate line of children associated
with Josefa Valdez. Because the documentary record is incomplete, the evidence
is best read as a family-history summary rather than a fully settled legal
account of each relationship.
U.S. census records place Gerónimo Armijo in separate
households associated with María Florencia Garcia and Josefa Valdez in 1910, and
DNA matches among descendants of both family lines—including Alejandro Armijo,
Vincent Sanchez, Joseph Madrid, Charles Madrid, and Vern Duran—support the
conclusion that the same Gerónimo Armijo was the common ancestor. The legal and
social nature of these relationships remains to be fully documented. Gerónimo
died on August 14, 1927, in Mora, New Mexico, at the age of 58. His burial
place is not yet known.
