Florencia Garcia Armijo


Florencia Garcia, later known as "Mama Enca," was born as a member of San Juan Pueblo Native American Tribe. The San Juan Pueblo people later returned to their pre-Spanish name, Ohkay Owingeh in November 2005.

When Florencia was born on February 16, 1871, in Cebolla, New Mexico, US Territory, her father Balasar, was 18, and her mother, Manueleta, was 16. Florencia married Jeronimo Armijo on January 24, 1887, in Mora, New Mexico. Jeronimo was 17, Florencia was 15. In a span of 24 years, they had nine children: Adela, Salvador, Maria Eufemia, Elicia, Eliseo De Jesus, Fidel, Lucario, Delfinia, and Margarita Dolores. Florencia also raised her grandson, Geronimo Armijo. Florencia died on April 10, 1953, in San Antonio, San Miguel County, New Mexico, at the age of 82. She was buried at San Antonio Cemetery. Casket bearers were Fermin Baca, her son-in-law Alejandro Otero, and her nephew Julian Armijo.
